Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, Michigan - It wasn't pretty, but the Muskegon Lumberjacks found a way when it mattered the most to walk away with a 1-0 home victory over the Sioux City Musketeers tonight at the L.C. Walker Arena.
The first two periods featured a scoreless stalemate as Lumberjacks Goaltender Kevin Lindskoug (16-9-3) and Musketeers Goaltender Joe Ballmer (4-15-5) each stopped 20 shots each to keep the game at 0-0. A big point in the second period featured a Musketeers four-minute power play when Defenseman Mike Preston was given a checking from behind penalty plus a game misconduct at the 5:07 mark. However, the Lumberjacks were able to use strong penalty killing to kill the penalty off.
The game would remain the same into the third period when the Lumberjacks (20-13-5, 45 points) were able to break the ice offensively with a power play goal from Forward Tyler Heinonen (assisted by Rasmus Bengtsson) at the 13:19 mark. The power play goal marked Heinonen's team-leading 14th goal of the season. The Musketeers (6-21-8, 20 points) were not able to get any offense going on 31 shots for the game as they would eventually pull Ballmer late for the extra attacker, but come up with no answer offensively.
The Musketeers outshot the Lumberjacks, 31-27, for the game, and the shutout marked only the second time Sioux City has been shutout this season. Muskegon was one-for-three on the man advantage, while Sioux City went empty on three opportunities of their own. Bengtsson led the Lumberjacks with five shots on goal in the victory. The win marks the first victory against the Western Conference this season for the Lumberjacks (1-3-2).
