Rimouski Powers over Sea Dogs

RIMOUSKI - The Saint John Sea Dogs started a three-game road swing through Quebec, falling to the Rimouski Oceanic 9-1 in Friday's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Newcomer Brett Malone scored the lone goal for the Sea Dogs and Jeremy Doucet grabbed his first point in a Dogs uniform with an assist. Sebastien Auger stopped 21 shots on 27 saves in the first two periods. Alex Fournier came in to start the third and stopped 12 of 15 in relief. Saint John falls to 18-22-0-0 in the rout.

Peter Trainor scored four times added had two assists for the Oceanic and Alexandre Lavoie had three goals and three assists as well. Anthony DeLuca tallied a goal and two assists and Frédérik Gauthier had a single and an assist as Phillippe Desrosiers stopped 15 of 16 in the win. Former Sea Dog Kevin Gagné had three assists as Rimouski climbed to 27-11-1-4.

The offense-first Oceanic came out strong and opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game. Gauthier, the QMJHL rookie assist leader, beat Auger for his 15th of the year.

Fitsicuffs erupted early with Maxime Villemaire making his Sea Dogs return known in physical fashion with a tilt against Lucas Grundy.

The Sea Dogs were down a man as the Oceanic attack continued and Rimouski made it 2-0 at 3:25 on a goal by Trainor.

Things for the Sea Dogs didn't improve in the first. Lavoie potted his first of the game at 7:28.

Former Sea Dog Gagné fired a point shot that was deflected by Auger and then chopped in by Trainor at 15:23. 's assist is his first point against the Sea Dogs.

Shots were 14-3 for Rimouski in period one.

Rimouski scored their second power play goal of the game at 8:42 of the second.

Desrosiers' shutout bid was taken away as Malone scored his first goal in a Sea Dogs uniform with a rebound goal at 12:41 of the middle frame to make it 5-1. Doucet grabbed his first point as a Sea Dog as well with an assist on the play.

Shortly following that goal, MacKenzie Brown set up Oliver Cooper with a beautiful chance streaking in on Desrosiers, but the puck wouldn't settle enough for a good scoring chance.

The brief reprieve from the Oceanic offense didn't last as Lavoie scored on the power play to make it 6-1 Rimouski at 16:50. Trainor added an assist for his fifth point of the game.

Fournier started the third period between the Saint John pipes in lieu of Auger and faced a streaking DeLuca almost immediately. DeLuca beat Fournier on the break at 2:04 of the third to make it 7-1.

Jakub Izacky put a laser beam wrist shot off the right post late in the third. Desroseirs was completely beaten and gave a friendly tap to the post after the play swung back towards the Sea Dogs zone.

Trainor scored his fourth of the game after Gagné made a great defensive play to send the Oceanic back into the Sea Dogs zone. Trainor beat Fournier at 4:25 for his fourth goal of the game as Gagné tallied his fourth assist.

Lavoie completed the hat-trick at 17:43 to make the final score 9-1.
