Roster Begins to Take Shape for Upcoming SummerJanuary 9, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) Willmar Stingers
Players joining the Stingers this summer will include junior shortstop Logan Davis (University of San Diego), sophomore left-handed pitcher Max Homick (University of San Diego), and sophomore catcher Brian Olson (Seattle University).
Davis, a 6-foot-2, 175 pound infielder was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 38th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. He opted to attend college rather than enter the professional ranks and attended Hofstra University for one year. Davis then transferred to Chandler Gilbert Community College last year where he hit .321 and posted an on-base percentage of .371 and stole 36 bases in 52 games during his sophomore year.
The Scottsdale, AZ native is the son of two-time Major League All-Star Mark Davis. Mark Davis's 44 saves and a 1.85 Earned Run Average in 1989 earned him the Cy Young Award honors with the San Diego Padres.
Mark Davis finished his 16-year playing career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1997. One of his stops during his career was in Kansas City where he played with Stingers' 2012 opening night guest and former American League Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen.
The other two players to sign this week are Homick and Olson. Homick, a 6-foot-3, 205 pound pitcher who appeared in 12 games last year for the Toreros. He posted a 1-0 record as a freshman last year, struck out 19 hitters in 27 1/3 innings and looks to be an anchor for the pitching staff for the Toreros, which are currently ranked 12th nationally in the latest NCAA Division I polls.
Olson will be one of three catchers the Stingers will sign to play catcher next summer. He is a 6-foot, 190 pound sophomore who had an impressive freshman campaign for the Seattle. In 49 games, he hit .276 with eight doubles, walked 23 times and threw out 17 potential base runners. In high school as a senior he was named All-State in Washington by the Seattle Times.
The 2013 roster will be compiled of 30 players across the country and the roster will continue to take shape in the upcoming months. For more information on the recent players to sign and all Stingers information, visit www.willmarstingers.com. The 2013 season is presented by Charter.
