Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced they have hired Bart Zeller as the bench coach for the 2013 season.

The 71-year-old Chicago native brings a rich history to the position. After attending the University of Arizona for his freshman year, Zeller transferred to Eastern Illinois University where he earned All-Conference status in both football and baseball. He was named NAIA All-American (3rd team) in baseball.

He played professional baseball at all levels in the St. Louis Cardinals' system, advancing to the Major League roster in 1970. He left the Cardinals in 1971 to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers, and was then traded to the New York Yankees where he retired as an active player following the 1971 season.

Zeller's coaching career began when he was a player/coach in the Cardinal's system (Lewiston, ID {class A} and Little Rock, AR {class AA}). He served as bench and hitting coach in Sioux Falls of the Northern League in 2005 and American Association in 2006.

Zeller was the hitting coach/third base coach for the Southern Illinois Miners ( Frontier League ) in their inaugural 2007 season. Zeller signed on as manager of the Joliet Slammers in January 2011.

He and his wife reside in Scottsdale, AZ. They have four children and five grandchildren.

Washington opens the 2013 season with a six game road trip beginning May 17th. The home opener is set for Friday, May 24th when the Wild Things will host the Southern Illinois Miners to a three game set.
