Daytona Cubs Announce 2013 Field StaffDecember 11, 2012 - Florida State League (FSL) Daytona Tortugas
Dave Keller takes over managerial duties in Daytona after serving as Iowa's hitting coach in 2012. In his 10th season with the organization, Keller was an assistant on the Major League coaching staff in 2011. Prior to 2011, Keller served as the Cubs Minor League Hitting Coordinator from 2004-2010 and boasts 26 years of Minor League coaching and managerial experience. Keller is a former first baseman who played professionally in the Reds' organization from three seasons (1982-84), batting .289 with 22 home runs and 108 RBIs.
"I'm very very excited about coming to Daytona and becoming the manager," Keller said. "I'm really grateful and thankful that the Cubs think highly enough of me to make me the manager. Managing has kind of been on the back shelf for a bit while I've been the hitting coordinator and assistant hitting coach in big leagues. Then, as each year went by over last four or five seasons, I've kept wanting to manage again and could not be more excited about the whole thing. Daytona is such a great place for baseball and I'm very excited about the possibilities of our team this year with all the talent in the system."
Joining Keller in Daytona will be newly hired pitching coach Storm Davis, who spent the last two seasons in the Texas organization as Single-A Hickory's pitching coach. Davis spent time as a coach for The Bolles Academy in Jacksonville, FL., winning the Class 3A Florida State Championship in both 2009 and 2010. The former Major League right-hander went 113-96 with a 4.02 ERA during a 13-year career.
"I could not be more excited to join an organization that is so committed to winning," Davis said. "After talking with people on the Cubs staff, they showed how dedicated they are to winning a World Championship as soon as possible, and I'm excited to help develop the talent that will get us there."
Mariano Duncan begins his first season as Daytona's hitting coach after serving the last two campaigns as Tennessee's hitting coach. The 12-year major league veteran (1985-87, 1989-97) joined the Cubs in 2011 after spending the previous five seasons (2006-10) as the Los Angeles Dodgers Major League first base coach.
Pete Fagan returns to Daytona as the athletic trainer for the third consecutive season. Fagan boasts over 30 years of experience in professional baseball with the Cubs, Astros, and Cardinals organizations.
Brian Harper will serve as the hitting coach for AAA-Iowa with Marty Pevey managing the club. Ed Kohl, who served as Daytona's strength & conditioning coach over the last two seasons, will join Harper in Iowa as the Cubs' strength coach. Desi Wilson will work with former Daytona manager Buddy Bailey in AA-Tennessee as hitting coach. Marty Mason joined the Twins organization and will be the pitching coach for AAA-Rochester.
