New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution has exercised the 2013 contract options on 15 players from its 2012 roster, while declining next year's options on four players. Three players on the 2012 roster were already under contract for the 2013 season.
The Revolution picked up the contract options on goalkeepers Matt Reis and Bobby Shuttleworth; defenders Kevin Alston, Darrius Barnes, Stephen McCarthy, A.J. Soares and Chris Tierney; midfielders Ryan Guy, Lee Nguyen, Sainey Nyassi, Clyde Simms and Juan Toja; and forwards Diego Fagundez, Dimitry Imbongo and Saer Sene.
The Revs declined the 2013 contract options on four players from the 2012 roster: midfielders Fernando Cardenas, Benny Feilhaber and Blair Gavin; and goalkeeper Tim Murray. Gavin and Murray are now eligible to enter the MLS Re-Entry Process, which begins next week.
Three players from the 2012 roster were already under contract for the 2013 season: forward Jerry Bengtson, midfielder Kelyn Rowe (Generation adidas) and defender Tyler Polak (Generation adidas).
In addition to the two players already signed this off-season "" Kalifa Cisse and Andy Dorman "" the team's 2013 roster currently stands at 20 players.
"After every season, we have to take a hard look at our roster and make some difficult decisions, both for personnel and salary budget considerations," Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said. "In our case, we'll continue discussions with some of the players we declined options on to see if the potential exists for them to return to the club next year. We have retained a core group of players for next season and we'll continue strengthening the team this off-season."
Additionally, the team has parted ways with reserve team coach David Vaudreuil and has begun the search for a new assistant coach.
A seven-year MLS veteran as a player, Vaudreuil joined the Revolution's coaching staff in April and focused on coaching the team's reserve players, while continuing to lead the Connecticut Football Club's Azzurri Premier team.
"We want to thank David for his services to the team this season and wish him the best, but as we examined our coaching staff for 2013, we decided we needed to move in a different direction with his position," Burns said.
The Revolution's current 2013 roster:
Goalkeepers (2): Matt Reis, Bobby Shuttleworth
Defenders (6): Kevin Alston, Darrius Barnes, Stephen McCarthy, Tyler Polak, A.J. Soares, Chris Tierney
Midfielders (8): Kalifa Cisse, Andy Dorman, Ryan Guy, Lee Nguyen, Sainey Nyassi, Kelyn Rowe, Clyde Simms, Juan Toja
Forwards (4): Jerry Bengtson, Diego Fagundez, Dimitry Imbongo, Saer Sene
