Pirates Can't Overcome Deficit, Fall to Falcons 3-2

Portland, Maine - The Pirates were unable to dig themselves out of a three goal hole in the first, falling to the Springfield Falcons 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,187 in Springfield.

Springfield got the onslaught underway early, with Matt Calvert converting on the first power play opportunity of the night. Calvert scored on a tip in past goaltender Mark Visentin just 4:27 into the first to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. It was the 6th straight game where the Falcons scored first, but they weren't done. With 5:09 left in the first and the Pirates on the power play, the Falcons struck again, with Andrew Joudrey converting on the shorthanded opportunity. The goal, Joudrey's 2nd of the year, was the 6th shorthanded goal allowed by Portland this season, the most in the AHL. The Falcons would get one more, this time from Ryan Johansen with 1:32 left in the period, and the first period expired with the Falcons holding a 3-0 advantage. Springfield outshot the Pirates by a 19-4 margin in the first.

In the second, Portland fought back. The Pirates ended up on a 5-on-3 power play after David Rundblad drew two separate penalties, and Michael Stone got one back. At 5:20 into the 2nd, Stone took Rundblad's pass and put it past Falcons' goalie Curtis McElhinney to get the Pirates on the board. Just under 10 minutes later, the Pirates struck again, with Ethan Werek tipping a pass from Alexandre Bolduc past McElhinney to put the Pirates within 1. Werek's second goal of the season gave Bolduc a 6 game point streak.

The third period was full of face paced action, with both sides having opportunities to score. Portland's Visentin made a handful of beautiful saves to prevent the Falcons' from extending their lead, while McElhinney turned away all 10 shots he faced. In the end, Springfield outlasted the Pirates to take the victory.

Springfield improves to 5-1-0-1 on the season, while Portland falls to 3-3-1-0. Mark Visentin takes the loss for the Pirates, dropping to 1-1-0 on the season despite stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced. Curtis McElhinney (5-1-0)., the former Pirates goaltender stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced for the win.

The Pirates return to the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland for their next contest on Friday, November 2nd, when they face the St. John's IceCaps.
