Former Northwoods League Players Seek World Series Push

(ST. CLOUD, MINN)- An unprecedented number of former Northwoods League players continue their Major League Baseball Playoff push to the 2012 World Series. Max Scherzer (La Crosse) will be the starting pitcher tonight for the Detroit Tigers and looks to finish what former Northwoods League pitcher Drew Smyly (Duluth) started for Detroit. Smyle was the winning pitcher in game #1 against former NWL player Curtis Granderson (Mankato) and the New York Yankees. Former Northwoods Leaguer Andy Dirk (Brainerd) has started every game in the outfield for Detroit in the ALCS. Detroit's Danny Worth (Alexandria) may also see action off the bench tonight.

In the National League Championship Series the entire right side of the starting infield for the St. Louis Cardinals are Northwoods League alums in first baseman Allen Craig (Alexandria) and second baseman Daniel Descalso (Wisconsin Woodchucks). NWL alum Brandon Crawford (Mankato) has started every game in the NLCS at shortstop for the San Francisco Giants.

With the conclusion of the 2012 regular season 96 former Northwoods League players have debuted in Major League Baseball. The League has 16 teams in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, and Ontario. The Northwoods League will celebrate its' 20th season in 2013.

The St. Cloud Rox finished their 2012 inaugural season leading the NWL North Division in attendance with nearly 56,000 fans attending Rox baseball. The 2013 Rox schedule is expected to be released in November. 2013 season ticket packages are available now by calling (320) 240-9798.
