FRISCO, Texas (Sunday, Sept. 2) - FC Dallas came from behind to draw Seattle Sounders FC, 1-1, at FC Dallas Stadium tonight. Jackson scored Dallas' goal in the 32nd minute. He was assisted on the play by Blas Perez.
FC Dallas had its first good chance of the match stopped on the goal line by Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning in the sixth minute. The play began near midfield, where Jackson floated a ball out to the right flank for Zach Loyd. The right back beat his defender and sent a cross to the center of the six-yard box for Perez. The Panamanian international rose above his marker to head a shot on goal, only to have his attempt fly directly at Gspurning.
The Seattle Sounders fired back and took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Steve Zakuani initiated the attack by beating a defender on the left side, running towards the end line and slipping a pass to the back post for Mauro Rosales. The Argentine midfielder timed his run well and was able to finish off the chance uncontested.
Needing a result in order to catch the Vancouver Whitecaps (10-11-7, 37 points) for the fifth and final berth in MLS Cup playoffs, Dallas (8-12-9, 33 points) pressed forward in search of an equalizer. After 12 minutes of pressuring Seattle, FC Dallas found the back of the net in the 32nd minute. On the play, Perez came free at the top right corner of the area, turned and hit a first-touch volley towards the back post. The shot skipped quickly through the area, directly to the feet of Jackson, who poked a shot past Gspurning with the outside of his right foot to knot the game at one goal apiece.
Seattle tested FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman one more time in the first half when Rosales came open on the right flank and lofted a ball to the back post for Brad Evans. The late arriving midfielder attempted to slip a header under the crossbar, but Hartman came across his line to tip the ball over the goal and out for a corner kick.
FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders played 24 minutes into the second half before the first quality scoring opportunity, when Gspurning was called upon to make two huge saves in the 69th minute. The first started with a nice buildup between David Ferreira and Perez to free up Jackson, who was in alone on goal against the Seattle goalkeeper. Jackson attempted to pick out the far post with a low strike, but Gspurning came off his line to push the ball wide with a right-handed save. Seconds later, Jair Benitez came forward from his position at left back to send in a cross to Perez. The Panamanian once again won the header, but struck his shot directly at Gspurning, who made the easy save.
Dallas had one final chance to pick up three points in stoppage time. Ferreira hustled to recover the ball from a Seattle defender near the corner flag. The Colombian blocked the clearance attempt, recovered the ball and dribbled down the end line toward goal. Ferreira drew the attention of Gspurning, before attempting to pick out Perez inside the six-yard box, but the pass was cut out by a Sounders defender.
