Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - On the strength of a seven-run first inning, the Round Rock Express eased past the New Orleans Zephyrs 10-6 in Wednesday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (67-72) clinched the series with the win after sweeping Tuesday's doubleheader. The Zephyrs (73-66) have lost five straight.
The series originally was scheduled to be played at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. However, it was moved to The Dell Diamond due to Hurricane Isaac. New Orleans was designated as the home team by the league office.
Round Rock sent 12 batters to the plate in the seven-run first, collecting six hits with two walks and benefitting from one New Orleans error. Julio Borbon, who led off with a single, scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Ryan Spilborghs followed with a sacrifice fly, and Matt Kata delivered an RBI single. Mike Bianucci's RBI double pushed the lead to 4-0, and Alberto Gonzalez followed with a two-run, ground-rule double. Borbon capped the first-inning scoring with an RBI single.
Express starter Chad Bell (5-4) picked up the win; he allowed two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings with four strikeouts.
New Orleans starter Brad Hand (11-7) did not escape the first inning; he allowed all seven runs - six earned - on six hits and two walks over one-third of an inning.
The Zephyrs made a game of it in the seventh, posting a four spot to pull within two runs at 8-6. Shawn Bowman's three-run homer capped the inning. However, the Express posted single spots in each of the final two innings, including a Gonzalez leadoff homer in the ninth.
Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Borbon, Kata and Yangervis Solarte all had two-hit outings. Kata's was his 115th career multiple-hit game with the Express, breaking Mark Saccomanno's franchise record. Borbon is three hits shy of Saccomanno's 2008 franchise season record (157).
Bowman, Scott Cousins, Chris Coghlan and Kevin Mattison had two hits each for New Orleans.
Round Rock and New Orleans conclude their four-game series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Left-hander Martin Perez (7-6, 4.24 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express against Zephyrs right-hander Elih Villanueva (9-8, 3.92 ERA).
