COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Tuesday, August 28, 2012) - The Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer will honor heroes from throughout the state of Colorado during the team's September 5 match at 7:00 p.m. at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. The Rapids will host and celebrate local first responders and firefighters who responded to tragedies in Colorado throughout the summer, as well as several Colorado Olympians, including swimmer Missy Franklin.
"This year, we all witnessed the bravery and dedication of the police, firefighters, paramedics and others who work tirelessly to keep us safe," said Rapids President Tim Hinchey. "We were also inspired by the talent and athleticism of so many Coloradans in the London Olympics, who showed the heights that can be achieved through hard work. "We have had many occasions this year to celebrate the spirit that makes us all so proud to live, work, and play in this great state. Our match on September 5 gives us a chance to honor many of our Colorado Heroes."
"Colorado Heroes Night" will include special check presentations to the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation and the Denver Center for Crime Victims, each for $20,000, from fundraising throughout the summer by Rapids fans and Kroenke Sports Charities.
Fans interested in attending the match and participating in the fundraising can purchase special discounted tickets, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Kroenke Sports Charities, at http://www.rapidstix.com/ColoradoHeroes or by contacting Rapids representative Alex Teal at 303-727-3724 or ateal@dsgpark.com.
Among the many local and state agencies who will be attending the match are paramedics, police officers, firefighters, and medical workers from the city of Aurora, including those who were among the first responders at the scene in the theater tragedy on July 20. The Rapids are also hosting firefighters from throughout Colorado who have battled wildfires in the state during an especially difficult season. For those first responders interested in attending, please contact Lesley Linscott at latkinson@pepsicenter.com.
The Olympians in attendance will be honored in a special pregame ceremony on the field, celebrating their achievements in reaching the pinnacle of their various sports. For more information on Olympians at the Rapids match, contact David Lindholm at dlindholm@dsgpark.com.
The Rapids visit the Portland Timbers this Friday before returning to Dick's Sporting Goods Park to face the Timbers again on Wednesday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. MT. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 303-825-GOAL or visit www.ColoradoRapids.com.
