Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Reading, Pa.)---Having won the first three games in the series, the Reading Phillies (71-63) were routed by the Erie SeaWolves (55-77), 9-1, Sunday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Sitting at the second Eastern Division playoff berth, the Reading Phillies did not lose any ground to third-place New Britain after the Rock Cats were swept by the Fisher Cats in the team's series finale on Sunday afternoon.
The game got underway to a rocky beginning for the R-Phils when pitcher Brody Colvin was battered by Erie hitters for six earned runs in the first inning. Colvin gave up the inning's first pair of runs on a double by Jordan Lennerton to score Daniel Fields and Niuman Romero. After Tony Plagman scored Lennerton on a single, Brandon Douglas ripped his first home run of the night, a three-run shot, to the Launch DM Pub in left-centerfield to cap off the scoring assault by the SeaWolves.
Colvin settled down through the following four innings of his outing and only allowed two hits during that span. The Louisiana native dropped to 1-3 since arriving in Reading in late July. Since winning his first Double-A game on August 5, Colvin has gone winless in four straight outings.
Julio Rodriguez relieved Colvin in the sixth inning and proceeded to give up three earned runs on five hits in three innings pitched, including a second home run by Douglas that landed in the same spot as his first inning round-tripper.
Reading scored its lone run during the eighth inning when Eastern League All-Star Darin Ruf rocked his 35th home run of the season. Ruf, who also had a double, now sits at second among single-season home run leaders in Reading baseball history. With eight games to play, Ruf needs just two home runs to equal Ryan Howard's mark of 37 HR.
Ruf also tied the Omaha Storm Chasers' Wil Myers for the Minor League Baseball lead in home runs. At the end of the season, the leading home run hitter in MiLB receives the Joe Bauman Award, which rewards the recipient $200 for each home run hit during the respective season.
Third baseman Cody Asche continued with his productive month of play, going 2-for-4 with a triple. Asche is hitting .363 (37-for-102) with five home runs and 24 RBI through the month of August. The University of Nebraska product was drafted in the fourth round of the June 2011 draft by the Phillies. He is hitting .297 (69-for-232) with 10 home runs and 43 RBI over 60 games with the R-Phils.
Top prospect Trevor May (9-12/4.97) looks for his career-high 10th win on Monday at 7:05 in the series opener versus the Binghamton Mets.
