San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Steven Lenhart set off another raucous celebration at Buck Shaw Stadium with a 93rd minute goal to give the Earthquakes to a 2-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC in front of a standing room sell-out crowd of 10,744. Lenhart's goal came just one minute after the Quakes had given up the lead in the 92nd minute.
The Earthquakes (14-5-5, 47 pts.) stretched their lead in the Western Conference standings to five points over Real Salt Lake, who lost 2-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC Saturday. The Quakes remained unbeaten at Buck Shaw Stadium this season at 7-0-3.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Quakes took the lead in the 71st minute through a Simon Dawkins strike. The English midfielder one-timed a shot from inside the penalty area just past Sounders FC goalkeeper Michael Gspurning at the near post. Dawkins now has four goals on the season.
In the dying moments of the game, Sounders FC appeared to steal a point, as Fredy Montero headed home a loose ball from five yards out to tie the score at 1-1. The play started with a throw-in from the left corner that got knocked down in front of the goal. Montero was first to the ball and he drove a header past Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Lenhart came through again with his second straight stoppage time goal. On July 28, he scored the tying goal in the 98th minute to help San Jose grab a point against the Chicago Fire. Saturday night, he earned the Quakes the full three points, rising above the Seattle defense to head in a corner kick from Shea Salinas just moments before the final whistle.
Mark Watson manned the bench for the Earthquakes with head coach Frank Yallop serving a one-game suspension.
The Earthquakes travel to Canada next weekend to take on the Montreal Impact on Saturday, Aug. 18 for the first time in club history. The game kicks off at 4:30 p.m. PT and will air live on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
