Carolina Mudcats News Release

Lynchburg, VA - The modus operandi for the Carolina Mudcats offense has been to battle until the final out this year. Trailing 6-1 going into the ninth, the Mudcats (24-23, 56-61) nearly overcame the odds by bringing the tying run to the plate, but the Lynchburg Hillcats held on for a 6-3 win on Friday night at Calvin Falwell Field.

Jordan Cooper (6-6) suffered the loss for Carolina, allowing three runs over six innings in his third start of the season. Ryan Weber (1-2) earned his first win, in his first start, by tossing five scoreless frames. He scattered three hits and struck out six for Lynchburg (22-25, 61-56).

Ronny Rodriguez reached third to begin the ninth when third baseman Edward Salcedo bounced a throw to first down the right field line. Tyler Cannon blooped in a hit to shallow right to bring the score to 6-2, and later scored on a base hit by Alex Monsalve. With two out, Bo Greenwell singled to center to put two on for Giovanny Urshela. The hot-hitting third baseman, nine hits in his last 16 at-bats entering the ninth, flew out to the wall in center to end the game.

Salcedo cracked a two-run homer to left off Cooper in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. The Hillcats made it 3-0 on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Mudcats bullpen faltered in the seventh and eighth, allowing five wild pitches and a stolen base. Lynchburg took advantage with a trio of singles to plate the decisive runs.

Anthony Gallas drove in a run for Carolina in the sixth with a triple down the right field line. Greenwell, Urshela, Jesus Aguilar and Alex Monsalve all finished with two hits.

The Carolina Mudcats continue their three-game series at Lynchburg on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. The Mudcats return home to host the Frederick Keys for three games beginning August 13. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
