Dash Toss First One-Hit Shutout of 2012

August 10, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Winston-Salem Dash

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Three pitchers combined for the Dash's first one-hit effort of the season in Winston-Salem's 6-0 victory over the Potomac Nationals in the first of three Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Dash (29-18, 73-43-1) recorded their first one-hit shutout since August 26, 2011, when Winston blanked Myrtle Beach. The Dash pace the Carolina League in shutouts with 14.

Winston is also 30 games above .500 for the first time this season, and the club improved to 14-4 against Potomac (21-26, 52-65). Since 2005, Winston has won 14 or more games against five teams during a single season, and three of those occurrences have taken place in 2012.

Winston starter Scott Snodgress (3-0) once again wowed for his third quality start in four High-A efforts. Snodgress blanked Potomac over six innings and allowed Potomac's only knock, a Kevin Keyes double in the second. Chicago's fifth-round pick last season, Snodgress boasts a 1.90 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 23 and two-thirds innings in the Carolina League.

Behind Snodgress, Terance Marin twirled a pair of perfect innings out of the bullpen, and Taylor Thompson struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the one-hit showing.

The Dash jumped out to an early advantage in the second inning when Kevan Smith singled home Dan Black. One frame later, Keenyn Walker reached on an error, and Marcus Semien immediately followed with a run-producing double.

Winston-Salem turned this series opener into a laugher in the fourth. Smith, who had only notched one hit in his previous six games, rocketed a two-run homer beyond the center field wall for his third home run in nine career High-A contests. Later in the inning, David Herbek scored on an error, and Walker brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to cap the four-run frame.

Winston-Salem and Potomac continue this weekend set Saturday night at 6:35 from Pfitzner Stadium. Right-hander Chris Bassitt (3-2, 3.41 ERA) will start for the Dash against southpaw Matt Grace (6-11, 5.93 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:20 on wsdash.com.

The Dash are back at BB&T Ballpark Monday for a three-game series with the Salem Red Sox. To secure your seats, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
