Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are excited to announce that the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed three players to contracts for the upcoming season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton inked forwards Cody Chupp, Denver Manderson, and Scott Zurevinski.
Chupp, 27, will be entering his third full season of professional hockey, after having played for the Texas Stars, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and Wheeling Nailers. Cody's journey to the pros began in junior hockey, where he played one season with the NAHL's Lone Star Cavalry, before spending two seasons in the USHL (Tri-City Storm & Waterloo Black Hawks). Following his final season of juniors, the Big Rapids, MI native took his talents to his hometown school, where he spent four years at Ferris State University, majoring in Elementary Education, while also continuing his hockey career. In 144 career games with the Bulldogs, Chupp compiled 35 goals, 60 assists, 95 points, and 156 penalty minutes. At the end of his senior year, Cody made the jump to the AHL, playing nine regular season games and two playoff games with Texas Stars. He also played the 2010-11 season with the Stars, registering five goals and 14 points in 58 games. This past season, Chupp split time between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Wheeling, registering one goal and five points in 15 games with the Penguins, while posting 17 goals and 34 points in 43 games with the Nailers.
Manderson, 23, will be entering his second season of professional hockey in North America, after spending the entire 2011-12 campaign with the Nailers. Denver's journey to the pros began with a bit of time in the OHL and OPJHL, before he found a permanent home with the BCHL's Penticton Vees, where his career took off in a big way. After accumulating 52 and 56 points respectively in his first two seasons with the Vees, Manderson's production doubled during the 2009-10 season, as he notched 40 goals, 73 assists, and 113 points in 50 games (2.26 points per game). The Fergus, ON native then took his talents to Finland, where he produced 17 goals and 33 points in 46 games with HeKi. Manderson then came back to North America, where he recorded 18 goals, 22 assists, and 40 points in 52 games with Wheeling.
Zurevinski, 24, will be entering his first full season of professional hockey, after playing the final eight games of the 2011-12 campaign with the AHL's St. John's IceCaps. Scott's journey to the pros began in junior hockey, where he spent two seasons with the BCHL's Vernon Vipers. There, he put up back-to-back 20-goal seasons, totaling 47 goals and 94 points in 96 career games. The Saskatoon, SK native then attended Quinnipiac University for four years, racking up 46 goals, 46 assists, and 92 points in 155 games with the Bobcats. This past summer, Zurevinski attended the Pittsburgh Penguins Prospect Camp.
The Nailers will begin the regular season on October 13th in Cincinnati, in the first of four straight road games, before playing their home opener on October 26th against the Reading Royals.
