Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Mother Nature delayed the action at Fluor Field for nearly two hours on Monday night, but the Greenville Drive (56-58, 22-22) and the Hickory Crawdads (60-54,24-21) took it upon themselves to get the Boy Scouts in attendance home before bedtime. Stellar pitching and two big hits propelled the Drive to a 3-0 victory, clinching a series split with the Crawdads.
Greenville got all the offense it would need on the evening in the bottom half of the second, when David Renfroe deposited a Jerad Eickhoff (11-5) offering well over the center field wall for a solo shot and a 1-0 Drive lead.
Bryan Johns gave the Drive a bit of insurance just in case with a liner up the middle, scoring Drew Turocy and Jose Vinicio to extend the lead to 3-0.
Mickey Pena (6-5) was terrific in his first outing off the disabled list for the Drive, throwing five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out six. Nefi Ogando followed with two scoreless frames of his own to preserve the lead, and Mike McCarthy and Tyler Lockwood finished suit by throwing a scoreless inning apiece, with Lockwood picking up his eighth save of the season.
The Crawdads wouldn't go down in the ninth without a fight, however. Lockwood issued a leadoff walk to Drew Robinson, and after back-to-back singles by Alejandro Selen and Trever Adams with one out, Lockwood was in a jam. He bore down to get Kellin Deglan to fly out to shallow right and coax a groundball to second from Jorge Alfaro to finish things off.
Johns and Keury De la Cruz picked up a pair of hits each for the Drive. Adams collected three of the Crawdads' five hits on the evening.
Greenville has Tuesday off and will travel to take on the division rival Savannah Sand Gnats beginning on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. RHP Noe Ramirez (2-3, 3.16) will get the start for the Drive in the series opener.
The Drive return home on Monday, August 13th for a three-game series versus the first place Rome Braves. Greenville Hospital System's Centennial Celebration, in which they are "buying out the ballpark" for the Upstate community, kicks off the short home stint.
