Daytona Fends off Late Miracle Rally to Win 8-4

DAYTONA, Fla. (July 30, 2012) - The Fort Myers Miracle lost 8-4 to the Daytona Cubs on Monday night in the series opener at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.The Cubs blitzed Miracle starter Cole Nelson, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Daytona's John Andreoli led off the first inning with a single, stole second and the scored the first run of the game on a fielding error by Fort Myers first baseman Michael Gonzales.
Daytona's Rafael Lopez and Matt Cerda each added RBI singles in the first to take a 3-0 lead.
In the second, the Cubs added another pair with a run-scoring triple by Roni Torreyes followed by a RBI single through the right side from Rubi Silva. Leading 5-0, Daytona got another two runs on three hits with a sacrifice fly from Tim Saunders and another RBI for Torreyes on a single.
Trailing by eight runs going into the ninth, the Miracle offense finally scratched across a some runs. With one out, Josmil Pinto singled through the left side followed by a walk and a base hit from Mike Gonzales.
Anderson Hidalgo then smacked a first pitch fastball from Cubs reliever Matt Searle into the left center field gap to score three runs. Fort Myers pushed across a fourth when a high chopper from Danny Ortiz forced an errant throw from Torreyes and brought in Hidalgo.
Searle was able to record the final two outs without any further damage to finish the game with Daytona taking game one of a four-game series.
The Miracle return to Jackie Robinson Field for game two on Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman at www.miraclebaseball.com. The State Farm pregame show begins at 6:45 p.m.
