
Maxwell Leads Vermont To 7-2 Victory At Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, MD ---ÃÂ Bruce Maxwell went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the sixth inning and a three-run double in the eighth as the Vermont Lake Monsters snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Ripken Stadium.
For their seventh straight game a Lake Monsters opponent scored the first run of the game as Aberdeen scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off Vermont starter J.C. Menna. Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, playing for the Ironbirds on a rehab assignment, led of the inning with a walk and scored on a Creede Simpson RBI double. Roberts went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in his five plate appearances.
It stayed 2-0 Aberdeen until the sixth inning when the Lake Monsters snapped a 17-inning scoreless streak with a pair of runs. John Wooten led off the inning with a single and scored from first on Maxwell's first double, a line drive shot to rightcenter, to cut the ldeficit to 2-1. One out later, Maxwell moved to third on a Reynaldo Mateo single to left and then scored as Wilfredo Solano beat out a potential double-play grounder for an RBI fielder's choice.
The Lake Monster took the lead in the seventh as Chris Bostick doubled with one out and then scored two batters later on a Wooten RBI single to right for a 3-2 advantage. Brett Vertigan gave Vermont a 4-2 lead with an RBI infield single in the eighth before Maxwell gave the Lake Monsters a much needed cushion with his three-run double to right for the five-run advantage. Maxwell tied a pair of team season-high's in the game with two doubles (Bostick July 14th at Williamsport) and four RBI (Wooten June 23rd at Lowell).
Vertigan, Lewis and Chad Lewis each had two hits for Vermont, which outhit Aberdeen 12-6 for the game. Lake Monster reliever Nate Eppley (2-0) allowed one hit with one walk and two strikeouts over 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory as three Vermont relievers combined to allow just one hit over five innings. Ironbird starter Sebastian Vader (1-5) gave up three runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.
The victory was the first for the Lake Monsters on their current six-game roadtrip after being swept in a three-game series at Auburn. The roadtrip will wrap up with single games at Aberdeen (16-24) on Sunday at 5:35 pm and Monday at 7:05 pm. Vermont (19-21) then returns home to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand August 1-6 against Mahoning Valley and Batavia.
