Baez's blast downs Kernels, 3-2

PEORIA, Illinois - Javier Baez's 2-run home run in the 8th inning led the Peoria Chiefs to a 3-2 victory over the Kernels on Friday evening. The win gave the Chiefs their first lead of the ballgame and completed a sweep of the Kernels.

Baez's home run went to deep left field and came after Wes Darvill led off the 8th inning with a double to right field. The shot came off of Kernels reliever Stephen Tromblee (4-1), who was saddled with the loss. Tromblee went one inning, allowing the two runs and two hits while striking out two.

The Kernels had led from the 1st inning until the 8th inning. Drew Martinez was hit by a pitch to begin the ballgame and eventually scored the game's first run. Martinez stole 2nd base, went to 3rd base on a Kevin Moesquit groundout, and came home on Alex Yarbrough's RBI groundout, putting the Kernels up 1-0 in the 1st inning.

The Kernels doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 4th inning when Zach Borenstein's 2-out RBI single scored Andy Workman. Peoria got on the board in the 6th inning, cutting the lead to 2-1. Oliver Zapata led off with a walk and came home on Wes Darvill's RBI single.

Dan Reynolds started for the Kernels and went 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three and walking three. Aaron Meade went 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one and walking two.

Austin Reed (4-4) picked up the win in relief for Peoria. He went 1.2 innings and allowed no runs on one hit. Zach Cates started for the Chiefs and went 5.1 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking one.
