Olympic Coach and Athlete to Throw out First Pitch at Naturals Game

July 27, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Northwest Arkansas Naturals

SPRINGDALE, AR - In honor of the start of the 2012 Olympics in London the Northwest Arkansas Naturals will be hosting Olympics Night at Arvest Ballpark. The night will feature two Olympic veterans: Warren Womble, gold medal winning United States basketball coach and Anton Kokorin, bronze medal winning Russian sprinter.

WHO: Warren Womble was named the coach of the 1952 United States Olympic team. He led the team and defeated the Soviet Union 36-25 in order to win the gold medal. Womble also coached the United States 1958 team, which became the first U.S. team to tour the Soviet Union. During the 1960 Rome Olympics, Womble served as the assistant coach for the United States National team. The 1960 team included future hall of famers Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Walt Bellamy, and Jerry Lucas. The 1960 US team went on to defeat Brazil 90-36 to win the gold medal.

Anton Kokorin, St. Petersberg, Russian native, competed in the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing for the Russian team. Kokorin earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter track and field competition.
