Auburn Doubledays News Release

NORWICH, C.T. - The Auburn Doubledays (17-8) only managed three hits one night after collecting a season-high 15, as they fell to the Connecticut Tigers (9-17) 3-1 in the first game of a three game series.

Two of the Tigers three runs came in the bottom of the second. First baseman Juaner Aguasvivas was hit by a pitch from Doubledays starter RHP Taylor Jordan (0-2) to begin the inning. That was followed up by a single up the middle by 2B Devon Travis to put two on with no one out. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt down the first base line by 3B Tyler Hanover. Swinging at the first pitch, RF Patrick Smith then doubled to the gap in left-center field, plating both runners and putting Connecticut ahead for good, 2-0.

Auburn cut the lead to one with its only run the very next frame. With one out catcher Spencer Kieboom singled on a ground ball to center field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch while 2B Tony Renda was at the plate. Renda ended up grounding out to short, which pushed Kieboom to third with two outs. Shortstop Wes Schill then brought Kieboom home on a line drive single to right. Schill ended the night with two of the Doubledays three hits.

The third Tigers run came in the bottom of the third on back-to-back doubles to leadoff the inning. Center fielder Jake Stewart hit the first double just a few inches fair down the left field line. He scored on a double by SS Jared Reaves that went just a few inches fair down the right field line. All three Connecticut runs were charged to Jordan, who's final line read four innings pitched, three earned runs on four hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

Starting RHP Endrys Briceno (1-2) earned the win by going 5.2 innings and surrendering the one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four. RHP Chad Smith pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Tigers without allowing a hit to pick up his first save of the year.

The Doubledays and Tigers continue their three game series on Sunday July 15. Auburn will send RHP Brian Rauh (0-0) to the mound for his first start of the year. He will square off against RHP Charles Gillies (0-1) for Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05pm.
