Strong Pitching Lifts Tigers over Doubledays

NORWICH- Tigers starter Endrys Briceno pitched 5 2/3 inning while giving up three hits and one run and striking out four to lead the Connecticut Tigers (9-17) to a 3-1 win in the series opener against the Auburn Doubledays (17-8) on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium in front of 1,207 fans.

RHP Chad Smith made his first appearance for Connecticut and pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking one to obtain his first save of the season.

The Tigers bats came alive for the second night in a row, scoring two runs in the second inning. 1B Juaner Aguavivas (0-3) led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch with 2B Devon Travis (1-3) following with a single to center field. A one-out double by RF Patrick Smith (1-3) drove in both men and gave the Tigers their first lead of the night at 2-0.

The Doubledays responded with a run in the third inning to narrow the Tigers lead to one run. C Spencer Kieboom (1-2) hit a one-out single to center field and reached second on a wild pitch. A two-out line drive single to right field by SS Wes Schill (2-4) scored Keiboom from second base and cut the lead to 2-1.

Connecticut quickly gained the run back on an RBI double by SS Jared Reaves (1-4). Reaves' hit scored CF Jake Stewart (2-4) from second base after he doubled to right field to lead off the inning.

TIGER TRACKS: The Tigers optioned IF Brett Harrison to the Gulf Coast League and received Reaves from the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Low A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. In five games with the Whitecaps, Reaves had three hits in 15 at bats and a .200 average.

Reaves started the season with the Tigers and was optioned to West Michigan on June 28.

The Doubledays and Tigers continue their series on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. Directly after the game, all kids in attendance get the opportunity to run the bases presented by Ben & Jerry's. There will be a catch on the field after the game for all fans sponsored by Dick's Sporting Goods. Both teams have right-hand pitchers taking the mound, with Brian Rauh (0-0, 1.29) for Auburn facing off against Charlie Gillies (0-1, 3.38) for Connecticut. The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League.
