-SPIKES WELCOME CYCLONES TO CENTRAL PA: The State College Spikes take on the Brooklyn Cyclones in the first game of a three-game series at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park tonight after sweeping three straight from the Staten Island Yankees. The Spikes have earned three sweeps in three-game series this year, the most in a single season since three in 2007. Brooklyn holds the all-time series lead, 13-5, and a 7-2 edge in games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Jacob Stallings led the State College Spikes' offensive barrage with four hits and two runs batted in to help Luis Heredia earn his first win with the Spikes as they pounded the Staten Island Yankees, 11-2, on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Heredia went five innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks, while Stallings drove in two runs, scored two runs and doubled twice to become just the second Spike this year with a quartet of hits in one game. The 11 runs were also a season high for the Spikes, who collected 13 hits total.
-HOLMES HEADS TO HILL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Clay Holmes gets the start for State College on the mound this evening. The 19-year-old went five scoreless innings against Vermont last time out, yielding just one hit, one walk and one hit batsman during his time on the mound. Holmes, the ninth-round draft choice of the Pirates in 2011, would be in the NYPL's top ten in ERA and would be second among starters in opponents batting average (.164) with the minimum innings.
-CYCLONES GIVE BALL TO MATEO : Right-hander Luis Mateo is slated to start for Brooklyn tonight. Mateo made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2011, going 6-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 80 strikeouts to just 5 walks in 63 innings for the Mets' #1 league affiliate. Mateo has gone at least 5 2/3 innings in all of his outings for the Cyclones this year, but allowed four runs in six frames against Jamestown on Saturday to take his first loss of the year after three straight wins.
-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with one earned run or less this year. Holmes, Heredia and Rodriguez hold the top three earned run averages in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system, and the team's 2.92 ERA is tops in the organization.
-SPIKE MARKS: Heredia's ERA of 1.13 now puts him in a tie for third-best in the NYPL...Joely Rodriguez is now in the top five in the league with a .198 opponents' batting average... Both the Spikes and Cyclones have a 2.92 ERA (tied for fourth-best in the league) entering tonight's game...Jordan Cooper is second among NYPL relievers in baserunners allowed per nine innings (6.1)
