-SPIKES LOOK FOR SWEEP AGAINST YANKEES: The State College Spikes take on the Staten Island Yankees to complete a three-game series at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park tonight after winning the first two games of the set. The Spikes will face the Yankees and the Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets affiliate) during the course of a six-game homestand that concludes on Monday. Staten Island holds the all-time series lead, 13-7, and a 6-5 edge in games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: For the second straight night, the State College Spikes fell behind the Staten Island Yankees but came back to win, this time by a 5-3 score last night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Yhonathan Barrios had three hits for the Spikes, including an RBI single that ended up bringing in the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Tyler Gaffney also collected his first two professional hits for the Spikes. Tom Harlan got the win in relief for the Spikes, while Jordan Cooper earned the save. The Spikes trailed 3-0 before surging back for the victory.
-HEREDIA MAKES HOME START TONIGHT: Right-hander Luis Heredia gets the start for State College on the mound this evening. The 17-year-old phenom was rated as the fifth-best prospect in the Pirates system prior to the season by Baseball America, and has lived up to the billing. Heredia has yielded just two earned runs in 19 innings of work for the best ERA in the Pirates organization and the third-best in the NYPL. Heredia has also posted 14 strikeouts to just three walks this year.
-YANKEES TAKE FLIGHT FOR MOUND ASSIGNMENT : Left-hander Tim Flight is slated to start for Staten Island tonight. Flight, the 17th-round draft choice of the Yankees in 2012, went 9-1 with a 1.31 ERA and won NCAA Division II PItcher-of-the-Year honors for Southern New Hampshire University this past spring. The southpaw played 2009 and 2010 at Charleston Southern. Flight allowed two unearned runs and struck out six over four innings against Williamsport last time out.
-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with one earned run or less this year. Holmes, Heredia and Rodriguez hold the top three earned run averages in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system, and the team's 2.96 ERA is tops in the organization.
-SPIKE MARKS: 2011 Spike Exicardo Cayones went 1-for-5 for the Yankees in last night's game...Cayones was traded to the New York Yankees as part of the A.J. Burnett deal this offseason...The Spikes have not swept three three-game series in one season since 2007, when they needed to take the last three games of the year from Mahoning Valley to turn the hat trick
