Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs couldn't bounce back from five-run seventh inning by the Dayton Dragons as they fell Thursday night 8-5 at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss puts the Chiefs at 7-13, 42-47 overall, as they'll look to take the series with the rubber-match of the three-game series Friday night at 7:00.

The Chiefs jumped on the board first in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Javier Baez and Wes Darvill strung together back-to-back doubles as Baez crossed home to give Peoria a 1-0 lead. Darvill was left at second as Stalin Garson got back-to-back flyouts to end the inning.

The Chiefs wouldn't lead for long, as Dayton knotted the score in the top of the fifth against Jose Rosario. Kyle Waldrop singled with one out before advancing to third when Yovan Gonzalez reached on a fielding error by Zeke DeVoss. With Juan Silva batting, Yovan Gonzalez was thrown out by Chadd Krist trying to steal second for out number two. After a walk by Juan Silva put runners on the corners again, Jefry Sierra laced a single to right scoring Waldrop. Silva was thrown out trying to score from first on a great relay by Pin-Chieh Chen and DeVoss to keep the score 1-1.

Peoria wasted no time regaining their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Hoilman singled with one out and after a groundout by Baez, was joined by Darvill who walked. Next up was Krist, and in only his third at-bat for Peoria, he tallied his first hit and RBI with a single to left plating Hoilman and putting the Chiefs back up 2-1.

The Chiefs lead again wouldn't last long as the Dragons came storming back in the top of the seventh. With rehabbing Justin Berg on the mound, Ryan Wright was hit by a pitch to start the frame before Waldrop and Gonzalez singled to load the bases. Silva hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Wright to tie the game at 2-2., Sierra reached on another error by DeVoss to load the bases again before Junior Arias grounded into a force out at second as Waldrop trotted home to give Dayton a 3-2 lead. Juan Perez made it 4-2 with a two-out RBI single to right as Berg was knocked out of the ballgame and replaced by Hunter Cervenka. Joe Terry greeted the lefty with a walk to load the bases for the third time in the inning, and Sean Buckley followed with a single to center scoring Arias and Perez to extend Dayton's lead to 6-2.

The Dragons added on to their lead in the top of the ninth. Perez singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Terry was called out on strikes for the first out. With Buckley at the plate, Perez stole third and came home to score as Buckley tripled into the right field corner to make it 7-2. With a drawn-in infield, Wright lifted an RBI single to center to give Dayton an 8-2 lead.

The Chiefs made a bid for a comeback in the bottom of the ninth against Ryan Kemp. Krist led off with a double and advanced to third on a Yasiel Balaguert groundout before scoring on a Chen groundout to cut Dayton's lead to 8-3. DeVoss kept the inning alive with a single to right before Easterling smacked his third homerun of the season into the left-field berm to cut the deficit to 8-5. That is as close as the Chiefs would get as Geiger stuckout on a foul tip to end the ballgame.

Rosario went six innings, allowing one run seven hits while walking one and striking out a pair in a no-decision. In his first rehab appearance for Peoria, Berg (0-1) lasted 2/3 of an inning and allowed five runs, only one earned, on three hits and one hit batter. Cervenka threw 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits and walk, while striking out one.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Taiwan Easterling (CF) - The center-fielder fell just a triple short of the cycle Thursday night. Easterling finished 3-for-5 with a single, double, and also smacked his third homerun of the season with a two-run shot in the ninth. The RBI are number 24 and 25 on the season.
