Quad Cities' Winning Streak Snapped in 9-2 Loss to Wisconsin

DAVENPORT, Iowa (JULY 2, 2012) - Left-handed reliever Jonathan Cornelius allowed six runs in three innings of work in relief of starter Willy Paulino, and the Quad Cities offense could muster only two runs on six hits, as the Timber Rattlers snapped the River Bandits' eight-game home winning streak Monday night by a 9-2 final in front of 2,219 at Modern Woodmen Park.

The Timber Rattlers broke the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs off Cornelius on five base hits. Wisconsin second baseman Carlos George singled to lead off the frame and advanced on a balk. Center fielder Chadwin Stang reached on an infield single, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly by designated hitter Mitch Haniger scored George, giving Wisconsin a 5-1 lead. First baseman Nick Ramirez struck out swinging but reached first on a throwing error by catcher Juan Castillo, which allowed Stang to score. A second infield single by catcher Cameron Garfield put two on with two outs for shortstop Yadiel Rivera, who singled home the third run of the inning. A single by left fielder Lance Roenicke plated Ramirez capped four-run inning and gave Wisconsin an 8-1 lead.

Quad Cities (7-4 second half, 42-38 overall) scored its first run off right-handed starter Matt Miller (7-5) in the bottom of the first inning. After third baseman Stephen Piscotty doubled with two outs, left fielder Anthony Garcia hit a single to left field, scoring Piscotty and extending Garcia's River Bandits season-high hitting streak to 11 games.

Haniger tied the game in the top of the third inning with his first professional home run, a three-run shot over the left-center field wall that scored right fielder Max Walla, who reached on an error, and third baseman Brandon Macias, who was hit by a pitch by Paulino (2-6).

The three-run home run was the only blemish on the line of Paulino, who posted his second consecutive five-inning, one-hit start against the Timber Rattlers. He allowed three runs - all unearned - on the lone hit while walking three and striking out a season-high seven.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the sixth, when Wisconsin (6-5 second half, 50-30 overall) added a run off Cornelius on an RBI double by Rivera.

The River Bandits scored their second and final run in the bottom of the seventh when Castillo tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a groundout by designated hitter Roberto Reyes. Wisconsin added its final run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Stang that scored George, who tripled to lead off the inning.

Quad Cities and Wisconsin conclude their series Tuesday at 6 p.m. Right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (1-3) is scheduled to start for the River Bandits, and right-hander Chad Pierce (2-2) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers.
