SPRINGDALE, AR - The Northwest Arkansas used a four-run first inning to complete a sweep of the Arkansas Travelers on Saturday night at Arvest ballpark. The win was the seventh straight for the Naturals, and coupled with a Tulsa loss puts them in sole possession of first place in the North Division.
The Naturals jumped out to a big lead in the top of the first inning against Travs starter Orangel Arenas. They tallied four runs in the inning, getting a two-run single from Johnny Whittleman, and an RBI from Julio Rodriguez to take a 4-0. Arenas (2-7) was removed from the game after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Rey Navarro.
The Travs (23-37) got some runs back in the top of the third against Naturals' starter Michael Mariot. Angel Castillo ripped a two-run home run over the left-field bullpen to make it 4-2. Mariot (2-2) went five innings allowing four hits and three runs, in his second start of the season for the Naturals.
Nick Van Stratten led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple into the right-field corner. Rodriguez drove him in to pick up his second RBI of the night to push the lead to 5-2.
The Travs scraped together two more runs getting an RBI single from Jean Segura and a home run in the ninth inning from Roberto Lopez, but dropped their fourth straight at Arvest ballpark.
Ryan Dennick worked three innings allowing two hit and one run, while striking out three to pick up his first save of the season.
The Naturals begin an eight-game road trip against the Tulsa Drillers on Sunday night. Left-hander Justin Marks (3-2, 3.64) will take the mound for the Naturals against the Drillers Parker Frazier (2-7, 4.50). First pitch is at 7:05 PM. and the game can be heard on NewsTalk 1030 KFAY.
