Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Cardinals, having already guaranteed at least a .500 homestand against the South Divison with their 8-3 win last night, looked to win their 5th straight series with a victory over Corpus Christi Monday night at Hammons Field.

Springfield sent lefty Tyler Lyons, who has dominated at home this year to the tune of a 3-1 record and a 1.88 ERA in 5 starts, to the hill against former 3rd round pick Ross Seaton of the Hooks.

In the first, the Cardinals wasted no time getting to Ross Seaton as they plated four runs, all with two out. After three straight singles with one out and a Jake Shaffer strikeout, Xavier Scruggs drew a bases loaded walk, Greg Garcia singled to score another and Audry Perez' two-run single capped the four run first.

The Hooks responded with a run in the 2nd as Kody Hinze doubled home a run to make it a 4-1 game. Corpus Christi added another run in the 3rd as Austin Wates and Jonathan Villar singled before Jose Martinez delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the Cardinal lead in half, 4-2.

In the 4th, Corpus Christi would grab the lead with two outs. After an error, a single and a fielder's choice, Austin Wates was hit by an 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Jonathan Villar came to the plate and was down in the count 1-2 before launched a grand slam into the trees beyond the center field fence to give the Hooks their first lead 6-4. All for runs were unearned because of the error.

Springfield would come back and tie the game in the 5th as Oscar Taveras led off the inning with a solo homer to right, his first since May 12th. Jake Shaffer then singled before Greg Garcia and Audry Perez collected back to back singles, Perez' good for an RBI to score Shaffer to tie the game 6-6. The Cardinals loaded the bases with a pinch-hit walk by Adam Melker, but Kolten Wong flied to deep left to end the frame.

The Hooks promptly responded in the 6th against Chris Corrigan and Justin Wright out of the Springfield bullpen, with two outs, Wates and Villar singled before Wright came in and walked Jacob Goebbert and hit Jose Martinez with a pitch to force in the go-ahead run; making it 7-6 Corpus Christi.

In the bottom of the 6th, Springfield not only tied the game, but regained the lead. Jermaine Curtis led off by getting hit by a pitch and Oscar Taveras singled to left, his fourth hit of the night. After a strikeout, Jake Shaffer singled through the right side to tie the game. Xavier Scruggs followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Taveras and take an 8-7 lead.

Corpus Christi took advantage of a Cardinals' gift in the 7th as Jesse Simpson began the frame allowing a double before retiring the next two batters. With two outs and a runner at second, Adam Bailey singled to right, but the runner had to hold at third. Now with runners on the corners and two strikes on Austin Wates, Simpson uncorked a wild pitch to allow the Hooks to tie the game again, 8-8.

The see-saw game went back to the Cardinals in the home half off the 7th and they did some major damage with two outs. After a hit by pitch and a walk, Chris Swauger singled to right to give Springfield a 9-8 lead. The Hooks intentionally walked Jake Shaffer before Xavier Scruggs lashed a two-run single to left to bring the Redbird's lead to 11-8.

Springfield added one more run in the 8th with two outs as Kolten Wong singled, Jermaine Curtis walked and Oscar Taveras singled to right scoring Wong to make it a 12-8 game. Taveras finished 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBI and tied a franchise record with four runs scored. Keith Butler followed Michael Blazek to notch back to back scoreless innings to give Springfield their 5th straight series victory.

The Redbirds will hit the road for a four-game series in Tulsa against the Drillers beginning Wednesday night at 7:05pm. Springfield will send Scott Gorgen to the mound against lefty Edwar Cabrera of the Drillers.

Springfield will return home Sunday the 10th for an eight-game homestand against their division rival Arkansas Travelers and NW Arkansas Naturals. Every Sunday is a Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday where all kids receive an ice cream treat on the Prime Patio prior to the game. Kids also can run the bases just like the Cardinals after the game!
