HOUSTON (Tuesday, May 29, 2012) - The Houston Dynamo will play Valencia C.F. in the fourth edition of the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup Thursday night. The game will be begin at 7:30 p.m. at BBVA Compass Stadium and will mark the first time the Dynamo play a club from Spain's prestigious Liga BBVA.
Valencia is one of the most successful clubs in Spain, having won six league titles and seven Copa del Rey trophies. The club finished in third place in Liga BBVA this season and reached the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League. Valencia will participate in the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League, Europe's most prestigious club competition, for the fifth time in seven seasons.
Valencia is led by leading scorer Roberto Soldado, who scored 17 goals in Liga BBVA and 27 goals in all competitions this season. Brazilian forward Jonas tallied 10 goals this campaign while Spanish midfielder Jordi Alba (33 games) and French defenders Adil Rami and Jérémy Mathieu (27 games) were mainstays for "Els taronja" in the Liga BBVA season.
Partial proceeds from the game will benefit Junior Achievement, an organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through hands-on programs. Furthermore, the Dynamo, BBVA Compass and Junior Achievement are developing an educational program about the business of sports.
"Junior Achievement teaches young people about the business of life, making the organization a particularly worthy recipient," said Manolo Sánchez, U.S. country manager and BBVA Compass president and CEO. "And we knew a program like the business of sports would cross geographical and cultural boundaries, so we're excited to be working with Junior Achievement and the Dynamo. It's a fitting commitment for BBVA Compass and our parent, BBVA, which is known as 'the bank of sports."
Thursday's game also features a food drive benefiting the Houston Food Bank. The first 5,000 fans to donate a nonperishable food item at the stadium gates will receive a branded cinch bag courtesy of BBVA Compass. The food drive will start at 5:30 p.m. and run through 8 p.m. on game day, or until supplies last.
The match includes a Jerseys Off Their Backs Auction sponsored by Dynamo Charities. Proceeds from the auction, which will feature Dynamo and Valencia uniforms, will benefit Junior Achievement.
