Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Quad Cities River Bandits right-handed starter Sam Gaviglio allowed three home runs, including the second go-ahead blast by Snappers designated hitter Matthew Koch in as many games, as the Beloit Snappers won their sixth straight game and dropped the River Bandits to their season-high fourth straight defeat by a 7-3 final score Thursday at Pohlman field in Beloit, Wis.

The fourth-place River Bandits (19-21) fell two games below .500 for the first time this season and dropped a season-high 6 1/2 games behind first-place Beloit (26-15) in the Midwest League Western Division.

Beloit leadoff man and right fielder Wang Wei-Lin hit his first home run of the season when he took Gaviglio (2-3) deep to open the bottom of the first inning. In the Quad Cities half of the second inning, left fielder Colin Walsh hit a leadoff double and came around to score on a single by right fielder Roberto Reyes that tied the game, 1-1.

In the bottom of the inning, Beloit hit its fourth home run in as many innings against Quad Cities pitchers. After a walk and a single began the inning, Koch hit a three-run homer to right that gave Beloit a 4-1 lead. It was the second three-run, go-ahead home run in as many at bats by Koch, whose first home run of the season turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 Beloit lead in the seventh inning Wednesday..

The three-run lead was enough for right-hander Matt Summers (4-2), who allowed just two runs - one earned - on four hits and one walk through six innings of work in which he struck out three batters.

The River Bandits scored a third-inning run on third baseman Tyler Rahmatulla's RBI single, which was the final Quad Cities hit until two outs in the seventh inning, when second baseman Luis Mateo connected on his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot off left-handed reliever Corey Williams, who had combined with Summers to set down 13 River Bandits in a row.

The Snappers hit their third home run against Gaviglio and fifth of the series when center fielder Jonathan Goncalves hit his first home run leading off the fourth inning. Each of the four Snappers to homer in the series - Koch twice, Lin and Goncalves Thursday and Adam Pettersen Wednesday night - did not have a home run before the series with Quad Cities.

The Snappers added a second run in the fourth when Koch doubled and scored on a ground-ball double play to make it 6-2. Gaviglio was done after four innings, allowing seven hits, a season-high six earned runs and one walk while recording three strikeouts.

The final Beloit run scored in the fifth, when first baseman Adam Bryant scored as Walsh bobbled a single in left field by third baseman Miguel Sano off Quad Cities right-hander Kevin Jacob. Jacob and right-handers Willy Paulino, Robert Stock and Ethan Cole each pitched an inning out of the bullpen and combined to hold the Snappers to one unearned run, five hits and one walk.

The series finale is Friday at 6:30 p.m. Quad Cities left-hander Dail Villanueva (3-2) will face Beloit left-hander Matt Tomshaw (2-1).
