
Biscuits and Suns Split Doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Biscuits (18-20) defeated the Jacksonville Suns (18-20) 7-1 Sunday afternoon after dropping game one of the double-header 6-2 at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Biscuits got strong pitching performances from spot-starter Merrill Kelly, Alex Koronis (1-0) and Kirby Yates. Kelly and Koronis combined for five shutout innings while Yates gave up one run in two innings to finish out the game. It was the the fifth time in the last eight games that the Biscuits have held their opponent to one run or less.
Montgomery added separation in the game after a costly error from Jake Smolinksi in the 5th inning. The Biscuits plated one run then loaded the bases with two outs when Kyeong Kang sent a fly ball deep to left field that Smolinski dropped, allowing three runs to score. Tyler Bortnick added an RBI-single to push the score to 6-0 Biscuits after the five-run 5th inning.
David Wendt finished game two going 3-3 with three runs scored.
Zach Neal (2-5) gave up five runs, only one of which was earned over 4.2 innings to suffer the loss.
Jacksonville took game one of the twin-bill 6-2 over the Biscuits. Montgomery took their first lead of the game with RBI-singles from both Greg Sexton and Brad Coon in the fourth inning to make it 2-1 Biscuits, but from there it was all Jacksonville. The Suns scored two in the third and three in the fifth to pull away from Montgomery.
Jake Thompson (0-4) suffered his fourth-straight loss for the Biscuits while Corey Madden (1-0) earned his first victory of the year for the Suns.
Game four in the series will be Monday night at 7:05. RHP Shane Dyer will get the start for the Biscuits while the Suns will send out LHP Graham Taylor.
