COLUMBUS - Justin Meram and Sebastián Miranda scored five minutes apart midway through the second half to reverse a 1-0 deficit and give the Crew a big 2-1 victory over FC Dallas Saturday at Crew Stadium. It also made the Black & Gold winners of the 2012 Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup competition between the two clubs owned by Hunt Sports Group, as it was their only meeting this season.
Dallas struck first thanks to Fabián Castillo's first goal of the season in the 22nd minute. But the match changed in the second half, with FCD going down a man for the second time in three matches when Zach Loyd received a second caution for a foul on Meram in the 63rd minute.
It took the Crew just four minutes to capitalize. Meram, who entered late in the first half when Ethan Finlay left injured, got the ball about 35 yards out after Eric Gehrig stripped it from Matt Hedges in the 67th minute. Meram finished low and hard, just inside the left post, for his first goal in 19 career MLS games.
Five minutes later, the Crew took the lead through Miranda's sensational snapped header from 20 yards out off a service by Nemanja Vukovic. It was the Chilean defender's first goal in 43 games since joining the Crew prior to last season.
One of the founding fathers of American sports, Lamar Hunt pioneered the rise of soccer in the United States. As one of the founding investors in Major League Soccer, Lamar Hunt was a visionary and catalyst for the inception, growth and success of MLS. His legacy in soccer in North America lives on in the two professional teams owned and operated by the Hunt family: the Columbus Crew and FC Dallas. In honor of Lamar Hunt, who was often referred to as a "Pioneer" in American sports, the Crew and FC Dallas launched the annual, regular-season competitive tribute series known as the Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup.
