SPRINGDALE, AR- The Northwest Arkansas Naturals defeated the Springfield Cardinals 8-2 on Friday night at Arvest Ballpark. The win improves the Naturals to 15-5 at home this season.
Jake Odorizzi (4-2) turned another quality start going seven innings allowing just six hits, and two runs, while striking out seven. Patrick Keating came on in relief for the Naturals in the eighth inning and did not allow a hit to preserve the victory.
The Naturals took the lead in the first inning when Christian Colon scored on a wild pitch by Cardinals starter Michael Blazek (4-2) to make it 1-0. The offense tallied another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rey Navarro grounded out to plate Sharlon Schoop to make it 2-0. The Cardinals (14-20) cut the lead in half with their first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
Johnny Whittleman delivered the big blow with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Naturals (18-16) a 5-1 lead. Whittleman knocked in his fourth run of the night with a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning. The Naturals offense tallied three runs in the frame and went on to win the game 8-2.
The Naturals continue their four game series with Springfield, on Saturday with first pitch coming at 7:00 P.M. The Naturals will send Noel Arguelles (1-3, 7.52) to the hill against the Cardinals left-hander Tyler Lyons (2-3, 3.34).
