Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Right-hander Sam Gaviglio pitched the deepest of any Quad Cities River Bandits starter this season, and catcher Juan Castillo and second baseman Luis Mateo each hit two-run home runs to back his effort and end a three-game losing streak in a 5-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium Thursday night.
Gaviglio (2-2) worked through eight innings, allowing three hits, two runs - one earned - and one walk while striking out six batters. He threw just 84 pitches, had four 1-2-3 innings and retired the final eight batters he faced.
The River Bandits scored first for the sixth straight game, taking a 2-0, second-inning lead when Castillo hit a two-run home run that also brought in left fielder Anthony Garcia, who had reached on a leadoff single. Garcia finished 3-for-5 with a double, but he also committed his first error in 30 games in the outfield that helped Wisconsin tie the game in the third.
The Timber Rattlers scored in the third on an RBI single by third baseman Brandon Macias, who advanced when Garcia's throw from left field got past Castillo and scored when Gaviglio, who backed up the play, overthrew third base.
In a 2-2 tie, Castillo drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, and Mateo homered for the second straight game and fourth time this season to give Quad Cities the lead for good against right-hander David Goforth (3-2), who finished five innings with five hits, four runs, four walks and four strikeouts.
Neither team scored again until the eighth, when River Bandits center fielder Nick Martini hit a sacrifice fly to score third baseman Garrett Wittels, who doubled for his second hit leading off the inning against right-hander Chad Pierce.
Quad Cities right-hander Heath Wyatt had a 5-2 lead to start the ninth inning, but he walked the first two batters, the first of which came in to score on a groundout for the Timber Rattlers' final tally. Wyatt still earned his team-high fifth save in seven chances.
The River Bandits, still in third place in the Midwest League Western Division, pulled within three games of the first-place Timber Rattlers, who they will face in a rubber match Friday night at 6:35 p.m., when left-hander Dail Villanueva (3-1) opposes Wisconsin right-hander Jacob Barnes (1-1).
