Loons Edge Cougars in Pitchers' Duel

Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - Led by starting pitcher Gustavo Gomez, the Great Lakes Loons held the visiting Kane County Cougars to four hits Sunday en route to a 2-1 victory at Dow Diamond, snapping the team's three-game losing streak.
The Loons plated two runs in the first inning on a single from Devin Shines and two walks from Kane County's starter, Brooks Pounders. The two runs were all the Loons needed, as the pitching crew helped to keep the Cougars at bay.
Gomez (3-1) delivered a solid day from the hill, limiting Kane County to one hit through his first five innings of work.
"I felt good today, you know, I was working hard for the strikes," Gomez said. "The other day I was throwing a lot of balls, so today I focused on throwing strikes and getting guys to swing."
In the sixth, Gomez surrendered his only run and three additional hits, which was the product of a blister that surfaced on the index finger of his pitching hand. Due to the blister, the Panama-native left the game with a runner on first and second with one out to go. Eric Eadington entered in relief and fired his first of four strikeouts on the afternoon to get out of the inning. Eadington continued to pitch through the eighth, before Yimi Garcia came in at the top of the ninth to collect his fourth save of the season.
Gomez picked up the win to keep his daytime success going. In three day starts, he has a 3-0 record and a 2.20 ERA (four earned runs in 16.1 innings pitched) vs. the 10.50 ERA he holds at night. Kane County's Pounders was charged with the loss.
Offensively the Loons were held to five hits, two of which coming off Shines' bat. Outfielder James Baldwin saw his hit-streak end at nine games, during which he went 13-for-34 (.382).
The Loons will host the rubber game of the three-game series against the Kane County Cougars Monday morning at 10:35 a.m. for the first of Dow Diamond's three School Kids Days. Starting for the Loons will be RHP Arismendy Ozoria (2-0, 3.93) against the Cougars RHP Aaron Brooks (2-2, 6.75).
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
