Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - On a ball that would have been a bases-clearing double, Maikel Franco had to settle for walk-off RBI single in the BlueClaws' 12-inning, come-from-behind victory over the Greenville Drive Saturday.
The Lakewood bullpen held Greenville scoreless over the final five innings to allow their offense an opportunity to pull-out the extra-inning victory. In the bottom of the 12th Brian Pointer double to lead-off the inning, then Carlos Perdomo walked and Aaron Altherr singled to load the bases with no outs. The outfield and infield was pulled in for Greenville, and Franco hit a fly ball well over the head of Cody Koback in centerfield for the game-winning, walk-off hit. Pointer stepped on home and Franco was mobbed by his teammates in shallow left field as he tried to avoid a pig pile-to no success.
The BlueClaws had one hit through the first six innings and trailed 5-1 before mounting a comeback in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the ballgame. Newly added first baseman Bob Stumpo and Harold Martinez singled, and Logan Moore walked to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Tyler Greene struck out to bring up Pointer with two outs and the bases still loaded.
Pointer- who did not start the game, but entered as a pinch runner for Gauntlett Eldemire after Eldemire was hit by a pitch in the left shoulder in the 3rd inning and was removed from the ballgame- connected on a grand slam to the right field berm to tie the game 5-5. Pointer's blast was his fifth of the season and was the first BlueClaws grand slam since Travis Mattair hit one on July 2 last season at Delmarva.
The BlueClaws will look to take the first two games of the three-game series against the Greenville Drive Sunday afternoon. The BlueClaws will send Ervis Manzanillo (0-1, 8.55) to the mound against Greenville's MattBarnes (2-0, 0.00) who has not allowed an earned run yet this season in 21.0 innings and leads the South Atlantic League with 34 strikeouts. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
