Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif.-Ports infielder A.J. Kirby Jones has been off to a great start so far this season and Minor League Baseball is taking notice, naming him the California League Player of the Week for the week of April 16-22.
Kirby-Jones went 9-for-24 over 7 games, with a .375 batting average and .483 on base percentage. He hit 2 doubles, walked 5 times, and had 8 RBIs, but the highlight of A.J.'s week was the game on April 18th against Lake Elsinore, where he hit 3 homeruns and knocked in 5 of his 8 RBIs, helping the Ports shut out the Storm 8-0.
Kirby-Jones is not unfamiliar with the honor of being named Player of the Week, having earned the title last season while with Oakland's Low-A affiliate, the Burlington Bees. Kirby-Jones was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the ninth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Tennessee Tech. The Tennessee native spent the entire 2011 season in Burlington, earning the distinction of Midwest League Player of the Week for the week of August 1, 2011. In Burlington, Kirby-Jones hit 13 HRs and 50 RBIs, with a .240 batting average and a .360 on base percentage.
Stockton Ports fans can check out the California League's 2012 Player of the Week all season long as he hits away to help bring the Ports a victory at Banner Island Ballpark.
