St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps are pleased to announce that single game playoff tickets go on sale Saturday at Mile One.
Tickets to the club's home playoff dates for the first round will be made available to the general public as of 12 noon Saturday.
IceCaps Chief Operating Officer Glenn Stanford also announced that the club's first home playoff date is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25. That will be Game 3 of the opening round's best-of-five series. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, will be played April 27 and 28. The team will start the 2012 Calder Cup playoffs on the road, against an opponent yet to be determined.
Stanford says the decision to start away from home was not an easy one, but the only option available if the team wanted to retain home ice advantage.
"Round one is a best-of-five series with two games at one venue, and three at the other," Stanford said. "If we had opened the playoffs at home, we would have been forced to play a potential Game 5 - the deciding game of the series - on the road. By starting the series on the road, we retain home ice advantage, which is something the team has battled all year to secure."
American Hockey League playoff regulations state that teams separated by more than 300 highway miles will play in a 2-3-2 format. With the opening round a best-of-five, the format is 2-3. For the IceCaps to have home ice advantage, starting on the road was the only option.
St. John's is currently seeded second in the Eastern Conference, but can finish as low as third. There are as many as four potential opponents for the IceCaps. The club leaves Thursday for its final regular season road trip, playing Friday in Worcester, Saturday in Springfield and Sunday afternoon in Manchester.
