Kitchener Rangers News Release
The Plymouth Whalers blanked the Kitchener Rangers 2-0 in Game 2 of their Western Conference semi-final series Sunday night. Whalers netminder Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves in his first career playoff shutout. With the victory, Plymouth evens the best-of-seven series at 1-1.
Both goaltenders were perfect through a scoreless first period. John Gibson stopped 13 shots for the Rangers, while Plymouth starter Scott Wedgewood made seven saves through 20 minutes.
The deadlock continued through the second period, with the Whalers out-shooting the Rangers 17-11, but neither team finding a way to beat the netminders.
Plymouth broke the tie with two quick goals early in the third period. Less than four minutes into the frame, Mitchell Heard's backhand pass across the ice found Matthew Mistele open to the right of Gibson and the rookie winger pitched in into the back of the net for his first career playoff goal. Austin Levi also picked up an assist on the play.
Just 66 seconds later, J.T. Miller jumped on a turnover at Kitchener blueline, forcing Gibson to make the save. Andy Bathgate was able to collect the puck and bury a rebound to give the Whalers a 2-0 lead. Also assisting on the overage forward's fourth of the postseason was Cody Payne.
The Whalers continued to lead shots on goal 15-8 in the final period and finished with a 45-26 overall advantage. Gibson made 43 saves for the Rangers while Wedgewood's shutout was the first of his postseason career.
The best-of-seven series is now tied at one win apiece and will resume in Plymouth on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:05pm. Scheduling and ticket information can be found here.
