Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Saturday, April 7, 2012) - Subaru has joined the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake to present the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup, with the first of the three rivalry matches taking place today in Utah. The two clubs have played for a special, supporters-initiated trophy since RSL joined the league in 2005, with Subaru joining in a two-year deal as the presenting sponsor for the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup.
"This is an opportunity for this fantastic local rivalry to attract even more attention throughout the region and across the league," said Colorado Rapids President Tim Hinchey. "Subaru is committed to developing this Rocky Mountain rivalry, working with both clubs and our fans to make the competition between the Rapids and RSL even more passionate and exciting."
The announcement was made in conjunction with the C10, a volunteer group of Rapids and RSL fans that serves as the organizing committee for supporter activities around the Rocky Mountain Cup. A statement from the C10 about the partnership can be found at this link; more information on the Rapids' local Subaru partnership will be announced in the future.
With Subaru joining as a partner, the Rapids will continue to develop the rivalry through several initiatives, and support the friendly competition between supporters' groups for both clubs. The Rapids will offer transportation by bus for some supporters to travel to Salt Lake for Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup matches, and provide field space and referees for a match between members of supporters' groups prior to games in Colorado. The Rapids and Subaru will also host a special tailgate for the supporters before the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup match.
Both Subaru and the Rapids will also work with supporters' groups to innovate ways to enhance the rivalry and assist the fans in developing the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup. These efforts will include giveaways, special deals, promotions, media opportunities, pub crawls and more.
The Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup has been played since 2005, when supporters groups from both teams joined together to award the Cup to the team with the better regular season record in matches between the two clubs. With the previous winner retaining the Cup in the event of a season series tie, the Rapids earned the trophy in 2005-06, while RSL has held it since. The teams meet three times in 2012, with the first meeting at RSL on Saturday, followed by games at Salt Lake on July 21 and in Colorado on August 4.
Saturday's Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. MT, with live coverage from Altitude airing on DirecTV channel 680 and DISH Network channel 457, as well as Mile High Sports Radio (1510 AM, 93.7 FM) and ESPN Deportes Radio (87.7 FM). A tape-delayed broadcast will air on Altitude at 10:00 p.m. MT.
