Windsor Spitfires News Release
After being named the recipient of the Windsor Spitfires Jason Bennett Award for Community Service on Monday, goaltender John Cullen is the Windsor Spitfires nominee for the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy as OHL Humanitarian of the Year.
This past season, Cullen started a community initiative called "ËCully's Kids' which he used to promote the importance of literacy and hard work to achieve your goals.
John visited numerous schools, daycares and libraries to read to children and share his stories of success while instilling good work ethics in their minds. Southland Insurance got involved with their "ËReading Is Fun' program, which allowed John to bring books to the schools and leave as a donation to add to their libraries.
Please show Cullen your support by visiting www.windsorspitfires.com and clicking on the link to "Ëlike' Cully's Kids on Facebook. John recently signed with the Ontario Reign of the ECHL and added to their 2012 playoff roster. Be sure to leave a good luck message for him as he begins his playoff journey with the Reign.
"The motivation and inspiration to start Cully's Kids was born many years ago through all the amazing influences I've had growing up, most importantly literacy being one of them," Cullen said. "Since day one, Todd Shearon has been the backbone of this initiative making all of these school visits and read-a-thons possible for the kids along with Ryan Richardson of Southland Insurance who helped with providing books for the schools. I'd like to take this time to thank both of them as well as all the schools that were kind enough to allow me to come and read to the children. Last but not least I'd like to thank all the kids. Through each reading I was able to see myself make an impact in their lives, and that's what means the most to me."
