Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SYDNEY, NS - Danick Gauthier set a personal, family and franchise record with two goals in the Saint John Sea Dogs 7-4 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Saturday. Saint John continued adding to the history, with their third consecutive 50-win season. Gerard Gallant also added to the history, becoming the first QMJHL coach ever to have three straight 50-win seasons.

Danick Gauthier had two goals setting the new mark for goals in a season, Stanislav Galiev and Aidan Kelly each had a goal and an assist, Ryan Tesink and Stephen MacAulay added singles and Dylan McGuigan notched his first QMJHL goal for the Sea Dogs. Jonathan Huberdeau and Charlie Coyle chipped two assists apiece. Mathieu Corbeil made 16 saves on 19 shots before giving way to Sebastien Auger at 3:10 of the third period. Auger made eight saves on nine shots in relief as Saint John climbed to a record of 50-15-0-3.

William Carrier, Denis Kindl, Kyle Farrell and Alexandre Lavoie replied for the Screaming Eagles, who fell to 23-42-1-2. Philippe Trudeau made 23 saves in the loss.

Tim Roszell had a unique colour commentator joining him in the Sea Dogs final regular season game. Charles-Olivier Roussel teamed up with the veteran sportscaster during the game's broadcast, giving a unique take on the play of his team for the first two periods.

The Screaming Eagles started fast again outshooting the Sea Dogs 6-0 and scoring the first goal at the three minute mark of the first. Carrier had the powerplay marker for Cape Breton.

Kindl extended the Cape Breton lead at 9:48.

Corbeil made two saves just shy of the 11-minute mark to keep the Dogs in the mix, first an excellent glove reaching back to the goal line for the save, and then a pad save on a streaking Carrier.

Gauthier notched his record-tying 46th goal of the season, and brought the Dogs back into the game at the same time. Huberdeau spied an open Gauthier heading for the net, and with a deke, Gauthier slid the puck just inside the right post at 14:31. Jason Seed had the second assist.

The goal also passes a personal mark for Gauthier. His father Daniel had 45 goals for the Victoriaville Tigres in the 1989-90 QMJHL season.

McGuigan netted his first QMJHL goal at 16:46 to tie things up at two. Grant West and Oliver Cooper set up the play, getting the puck in front of the net. McGuigan, sitting on the doorstep, nudged the puck over the line from the right side of Trudeau.

Coyle got the Sea Dogs off to an excellent start in the second period. Coyle cut along the right wing with speed around the static Screaming Eagles defenceman and fed a pass in front to Galiev who made no mistake, roofing his 13th of the season from the bottom of the left wing faceoff circle at 1:29. Pierre Durepos sprang Coyle for the other assist on the play.

Gauthier wasn't finished with records as he netted his 47th of the year, setting a new Sea Dogs franchise mark for single-season goal scoring at 6:55 of the second period. Huberdeau and Beaulieu assisted on the historic goal. On a perfectly executed faceoff win, Gauthier picked up the puck off a Beaulieu point shot, and slid it past a sprawling Trudeau for the marker.

The Sea Dogs turned up the heat to end the second period with two goals in 10 seconds. At 18:59, Tesink showed excellent hand-eye co-ordination to extend the Sea Dogs lead to 5-2 on the powerplay. Coyle fed Galiev the puck behind the net, who circled around and tried to pass to Tesink out front. The pass deflected off a stick in front lifting a few inches off the ice. Tesink slapped the puck in while still in the air past the right side of Trudeau.

MacAulay followed that up with an absolute laserbeam from the left wing faceoff dot to make it 6-2 at 19:09. Spencer MacDonald and Aidan Kelly set up MacAulay who made no mistake spotting a hole on Trudeau's right side. MacAulay's 15th of the season ties his career high set last season.

The Sea Dogs outshot the Screaming Eagles 14-4 in the second, exploding offensively with four goals to take a commanding lead.

Farrell kept the Screaming Eagle fans into the game with a goal at 3:10 of the third.

Cape Breton pulled within two on a goal by Lavoie at 14:05, but Kelly iced the game with his ninth of the year, an unassisted empty-net goal making it 7-4 Sea Dogs at 18:45.

The Sea Dogs return home on Friday to kick off their playoff run at 8 p.m. as Sportsnet is in town to cover the proceedings.
