The Medicine Hat Tigers scored 3 goals in the third period to complete the comeback and defeat the Vancouver Giants 6-4 Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum. Special teams was the difference as the Giants went 0-for-8 on the power play, while the Tigers finished the night 3-for-7.
The Giants opened the scoring just 1:24 into the first period as Marek Tvrdon banged home a loose puck for his 24th goal of the season. The Tigers responded exactly one minute later on the man advantage courtesy of the WHL's leading goal scorer Emerson Etem. It was his 54th goal of the year. The Giants quickly stormed back with a pair of goals from Jordan Martinook and Cain Franson to go ahead 3-1 just past the midway point of the opening frame. However, the Tigers would again capitalize on a power play cutting the lead to 3-2 through 20 minutes. The Giants outshot Medicine Hat 16-7 in the opening frame.
A penalty filled second period saw the Giants with a number of chances, but it would be the Tigers scoring with just under 4 minutes remaining in the frame, evening the game at 3-3. Then with the teams playing 4-on-4, Tvrdon ripped home his 2nd goal of the night to restore the Giants lead, 4-3 after two periods of play.
Medicine Hat started the third period on the power play and took just 35 seconds to make the Giants pay, tieing the game at 4-4. Boston Leier and Emerson Etem then scored goals 43 seconds apart to put the Tigers up 6-4. That would spell the end of the night for Adam Morrison, who allowed 6 goals on 19 shots. He was replaced by Jackson Whistle. Tyler Bunz stopped all 8 shots he faced in the third period and 35 in total on the night to secure the 6-4 victory for the Tigers, who improved to 9-2-0-0 vs. the BC Division this season. The Giants finished the season 3-8-0-1 against the Central Division. As mentioned the Giants struggled on the man advantage going 0-for-8, while the Tigers scored 3 goals on the power play.
Vancouver is back in action tomorrow night for the first of two games in Victoria vs. the Royals at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Puck drop is 7:05pm. The pregame show begins at 6:30 pm. It is the first meeting of the season between the Giants and Royals since November 18, 2011.
