Former MLB Pitcher Joins CornBelters Coaching Staff

NORMAL, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, are thrilled to announce that former major league right-handed pitcher Brian Lawrence will be the CornBelters Pitching Coach this season. The CornBelters will play their first game of the 2012 season at the Corn Crib on Friday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. (CEFCU Opening Night).
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to start a new chapter in my career," said Lawrence. "It's great to be working with Chad Parker and the experience he has to offer. I can't wait to get started!"
Lawrence was most recently with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim before retiring in June 2011. He began his career in the majors with the San Diego Padres after being drafted in the 17th round of the 1998 amateur draft. From 2001 to 2005, he started 146 games and tallied 49 wins, 61 losses, a 4.10 ERA, and 579 strikeouts over 934.0 innings pitched for the Padres. He pitched during two games of the 2005 National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals as well, contributing two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched. He joined the New York Mets in 2007 and accumulated one win, two losses, a 6.83 ERA, and 18 strikeouts over 29.0 innings pitched. Lawrence's major league resume also includes time with the Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins, and San Francisco Giants during his playing career.
"Brian is a great addition to our staff," said Field Manager Chad Parker. "Not only does he have big league experience and knows what it takes to get there, but he also has extensive minor league experience that will provide him the ability to relate to our players."
