Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LouisianaThe Pensacola Ice Flyers returned to the Cajundome to give the Louisiana IceGators a taste of their own medicine. One month after being humiliated in the Cajundome in an 8-3 decision and two weeks after losing 7-2 in the same building, the Ice Flyers handed the IceGators their worst loss of the season. Pensacola jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the IceGators 9-1.
"Anything that could have gone wrong went wrong," said IceGator forward Shawn McNeil. "We didn't play well. We got bad bounces that resulted in goals. We did many things wrong." McNeil later added, "We didn't do anything right." The IceGators were also without one of their leading scorers. Jordan Oye was suspended from the team for failing to report for a trade.
Those errors resulted in Pensacola scoring three goals in each period. Andrew Harrison opened the scoring a two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Dan Bucella and Ryan Ramage contributed the other goals in the first period. The Ice Flyers extended the lead to 6-0 by the end of the second frame thanks to goals from Chris Wilson, Jordan Chong, and Matthew Robertson. Ryan Salvis made the score 7-0 early in the third before the IceGators finally picked up their first goal. Tyler Lyon scored on a powerplay at the 4:27 mark of the third. However, another comeback would not take place. The Ice Flyers regained the momentum and tacked on two more goals when Robertson completed a hat trick late in the game.
"When you're down by six goals, it's tough to be motivated," McNeil said. "Throughout the season, we've proven we don't quit. This one got away from us. It snowballed. I don't know what else to say."
McNeil says the team must move on and learn from this game. "We need to put this behind us," he said. "It's embarrassing enough to live it once. We need to get some rest. We need to regroup and work on the small things and get better at them."
The IceGators return to the ice Thursday night when they host the Knoxville IceBears in the Cajundome. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:05 P. M.
