Washington Wild Things News Release
The Wild Things Need Host Families! The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, are seeking families to host a 2012 Wild Thing! Each year players from throughout the country descend upon Washington, Pa. to play Wild Things' baseball. These young men play not for the money, but for the love of the game. Their paychecks bear witness to that premise. Countless stories and movies have been written about the life of a minor league baseball player! They are driven by the desire to play professional ball. Part of the charm of minor league baseball is that the players join the community; they live with host families; they embed themselves into their "new hometown"; they take long bus rides to other facilities throughout the league to play ball --- all in hopes of making it to affiliated ball! "We can all help them fulfill their dreams, by opening our homes up to them," said Wayne Herrod, special events manager for the Wild Things. "It doesn't really require that much," he added.
"We need people who have a spare bedroom they are willing to offer to a player. The guys actually don't spend much time at their host family's home. When they are in town, they get to the ballpark midday for practice, and they don't return home until after the game; the rest of the time they're on the road," Herrod explained. The Wild Things are always looking for people who are willing to host one or more players for the season. Empty-nesters and families with more bedrooms than children are perfect candidates to be host families. "Interestingly enough, the folks who host these kids often comment that they get more out of it that the player does!" added Herrod. "If anyone has any interest or just wants more information, I hope they'll call me directly at 724-579-1068." The Wild Things will need host families when training camp gets under way in early May. The 2012 season gets underway May 18th and the Washington home opener is slated for May 22nd.
