Omaha Lancers News Release
Des Moines, IA - Alex Lyon registered 24 saves while Mark Miller and Greg Gozzo each tallied a goal and an assist as the Omaha Lancers blanked the Des Moines 4-0 in front of 3,462 fans at Buccaneer Arena. With the win, Omaha improved to 22-12-2 on the year and moved back into sole possession of first place in the Western Conference with 46 standings points. The Lancers have now won seven of their last nine games and 13 of 17 overall.
Omaha grabbed the game's opening goal just over two minutes into the contest when Miller found a streaking Nolan Zajac down the slot who made no mistake in driving home his fifth goal of the season. The goal netted 2:11 into period one marked the 17th time in 36 games this season the Lancers have scored the game's first goal. The marker also extended Zajac's point streak to six consecutive games as the blueliner has notched two goals and six assists over his last six games.
The Lancers doubled their lead just past the midway point of the second period when, while on a five-on-three power play, Jimmy Murray won a battle for a loose puck inside the Des Moines goal crease before driving in his ninth goal of the season. Greg Gozzo earned the only assist on the man advantage marker as Omaha notched its 13th power play goal in the last eight games. The Lancers stretched their lead to a 3-0 advantage less than three minutes later when a two-on-one resulted in Gozzo's 16th goal of the season at the 12:39 mark of the second period.
The Lancers landed the final nail in the coffin as time expired when Miller deposited his sixth goal of the season into an empty Des Moines cage sealing Omaha's 4-0 victory.
Lyon earned the victory in goal turning aside all 24 Buccaneers shots he faced for his third shutout of the season. With the win, Lyon improved to 16-8-2 on the year and has now won five straight starts in net. Meanwhile, Des Moines goaltender Christian Frey suffered the loss after 24 saves on 27 shots on goal.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they welcome the Fargo Force to the Omaha Civic Auditorium for a 5:05 PM showdown.
