Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Scott MacDonald recorded his first USHL hat trick and the Waterloo Black Hawks earned a 6-5 shootout win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders during a wild, back-and-forth matchup at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Saturday.
After a remarkably quiet opening period which included only 14 total shots on goal, the puck found the net with regularity in the second. The RoughRiders took a 2-0 lead on Davey Middleton's rebound strike and a wraparound by Austin Ortega at 3:13 and 9:03 respectively. The Hawks' response to Ortega's goal came with lightning quickness just 14 seconds later. Jake Horton shoveled in the rebound from a Josh Nenadal shot. Only 42 seconds after that, Aaron Pearce scored from a sharp angle to tie the game.
Cedar Rapids reassumed the lead at 12:20 of the period on Ortega's second of the game, a power play wrister while rushing into the Waterloo zone. The Hawks were shorthanded again when they retied the game; MacDonald received the puck from Tony Cameranesi and put it home with a determined effort at 16:11.
The scoring resumed with the same intensity midway through the third. MacDonald's second shorthanded marker came as he sped past a RoughRider defenseman and flipped in a shot at 10:11. However, during the same RoughRider power play 40 seconds later, Greg Amlong blasted in a chance from the right point to retie the game at 4-4.
With just under five minutes remaining, a big pileup in the crease gave MacDonald the chance to deliver another go-ahead score from the slot. The lead lasted just over a minute before Dennis Kravchenko scored from a similar spot at the other end of the rink with 3:43 remaining.
After the scoreless overtime, Waterloo claimed the shootout, 2-1, in five rounds. Taylor Cammarata found the net with the first attempt, but Ryan McGrath tied it with the Riders' second try. Jake Hildebrand and Eamon McAdam traded saves in the next two rounds before Vince Hinostroza pushed the Hawks in front for good with a low shot to the stick side with the fifth opportunity.
The Black Hawks finish the weekend by returning to Western Conference play against the Des Moines Buccaneers Sunday. Good seats remain for the in-state rivalry matchup which begins at 3:05 PM at Young Arena. Tickets can be ordered online from waterlooblackhawks.com or from the Black Hawks Box Office by phone and in person after 11:30 AM Sunday.
