Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants started off their 3 game road trip through Alberta with a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Red Deer Rebels Wednesday night in Red Deer. The Giants are now 1-5-0-1 vs. the central division this season.
Payton Lee made his 3rd start in net for the Giants in the last 6 days. He was busy early making 6 saves within the first five minutes. Vancouver would get on the board first, courtesy of Cain Franson who picked the pocket of Alex Petrovic and beat Devan Dubyk five hole for his 19th goal of the year. The Rebels would get the equalizer on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 through 20 minutes.
The Giants regained their lead early in the second period, as Nathan Burns scored on an unbelievable individual effort for his 8th goal of the year, to put the visitors up 2-1. However, 2:06 later the Rebels would respond scoring off a turnover to make it 2-2. They were not done there, they would add two more goals before the period was out to lead 4-2 after two periods. That would spell the end of the night for Payton Lee, he allowed 4 goals on 30 shots and was replaced by Jackson Whistle.
The Giants had a few chances in the third period, but were unable to capitalize. The Rebels held on to win 4-2. Vancouver finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Red Deer went 1-for-2. Whistle stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third period.
Vancouver is back in action on Friday when they head to the Saddledome to take on the Calgary Hitmen. The Hitmen are one of the hottest teams in the league having won 11 of their last 12 games. Puck drop is at 6:00 pm PST. The pregame show begins at 5:30 pm PST on AM 650.
